The 1965-66 season saw Newcastle finish the season off in 15th place in the first division. They were eliminated out of the FA cup against future finalists, Sheffield Wednesday, losing the encounter 2-1.
The Geordies were fortunate to stay up in the top flight by the end of the 1966-67 season, they finished the season off in 20th place, narrowly avoiding relegation to the second tier of English football. They were poor in the FA cup, suffering a 3-0 thrashing against Nottingham Forest in the forth round.
They made a dramatic improvement in the league the following season, finishing off the campaign in mid table, a respectable 10th place finish. They put on a poor showing in the FA cup once again, this time losing 1-0 to Carlisle in the third round.

Newcastle picked up momentum in the league during the following two season as they finished in respectable 9th and 7th positions in the 1963-64 and 64-65 seasons. They continued their miserable run in the FA cup during the tow seasons, elimination in the third round, losing to Brentford and Swansea.
