Feyenoord 2-3 Newcastle
Date Played – November 13th 2002
This champions league thriller started off at a slow pace and it was Newcastle who had most the early play, most notably, Gary Speed coming close from distance. Mid way through the first half Paul Bosvelt came agonizingly close for Feyenoord. With ten minutes of the half remaining, Craig Bellamy came close in a one on one with the keeper, however the score line remained goalless. On the brink of half time, Bellamy finally gave the Geordies the lead, thanks to great inter play with Alan Shearer. Newcastle stamped their authority on the match as Kieron Dyer doubled Newcastle’s lead early on in the second half. Mid way through the second half, Bombarda pulled a goal back for the Dutch outfit and five minutes later, the unthinkable occurred as Lurling equalized for Feyenoord. Newcastle mounted on the pressure after that, knowing victory was vital and during the dying seconds of injury time, Craig Bellamy scored for Newcastle which in turn clinched victory for the club and a place in the second phase.
